CLENDENIN, WV -

Students and faculty at Herbert Hoover High School are morning the death of a student who died after a terrible accident in Kanawha County, WV.

Leeann Spencer, 17, was killed earlier this week while riding in the bed of a pickup truck that flipped off of Reamer Road in Clendenin.  Deputies said Spencer was thrown from the vehicle, and the truck landed on top of her.  She was taken to the hospital Monday night and passed away Tuesday, according to authorities.

Two other teens were riding in the bed of the truck and taken to the hospital. The driver and passenger of the truck were also taken to the hospital.  Deputies said all four teens have since been treated and released.

Principal Mike Kelley said news of her death has been difficult for many people to handle.

"She had a huge heart," he said.

Librarian Terry O'Fiesh set up a special memorial for Leeann in the hallway. She knew students would want a way to express their feelings, she said.

"We're kind of a tight knit family here at Hoover," Kelley said.

O'Fiesh said Leeann's friends and even complete strangers have written in the memorial book. She plans to give the book to the family.

Leeann's viewing is Friday night from 6-8 p.m. at Matics Funeral Home in Clendenin. Her funeral is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday.

According to WV Code, there is now a law preventing passengers from riding in an open truck bed, according to authorities.

Deputies believe speed was a factor in the crash, they said.
