First lady Joanne Tomblin was at Doddridge County Elementary School on Tuesday.

While there, she talked to fourth graders about the importance of learning, and reading during the summer, and she also read a few books to the Kindergarten students.

She said encouraging kids to read during the summer is important.

“Education is the foundation for everything. Reading is important because you can't do anything today without being able to read. When I come to a school and talk about reading, I tell them it's great to have a summer off, it's great to go swimming, it's great to do all those fun things but you also have to keep up with your reading things. It takes you places you may never be able to go in your life,” explained Tomblin.

Tomblin also delivered 100 books for students to take home as part of the Scholastic Achievement Summer Reading Challenge.

She said it’s a challenge that schools around the country take part in, to see which school can log the most hours of reading during the summer.
