The YMCA of the Kanawha Valley recently announced it will honor former Gov. Gaston Caperton as its 2014 Spirit of the Valley recipient at a noon luncheon Aug. 20.

The Spirit of the Valley campaign is marking its 30th anniversary. It raises funds for the YMCA Community Assistance Fund and other YMCA programs.

The award honors an individual from the community who exemplifies what St. Francis described as a life of “charity and wisdom, patience and humility.” The award recipient chooses a charity to assist each year, and Caperton has chosen the YMCA to receive the funds.

Last year, the YMCA provided more than $200,000 in community assistance for access to child care, programs and facilities. YMCA facilities are located in Charleston and Cross Lanes.

Caperton is the former president of the College Board and was a two-term governor of West Virginia. He currently serves on the board of directors of three major U.S. corporations.
