    Nine Martinsburg, West Virginia, residents and another from Keyser were sentenced to federal prison for breaking the law while they were on supervised release or probation.

A workshop on unconventional oil and gas development kicked off at the Waterfront place hotel on Tuesday.

It discussed the positive economic impact that shale drilling has on the region and the negative impacts it can have on the environment.

Experts from WVU talked about some potential drawbacks with industry leaders.

"I think it's important for the lay persons in the region to be educated about some of these technologies and the risks posed with these technologies. I think you'll be surprised, people will probably learn that the risks, that they're over calculating their risks when it comes to some of these new technologies."


 
The Northeastern Agricultural and Resource Economics Association is hosting the event, which continues on Wednesday.
