New bicycle law goes into effect in West Virginia

CHARLESTON, WV -

A new law on how drivers interact with bicycles on the road went into effect this month.

The law calls for drivers to maintain a three foot distance when passing a bike rider. Bikers will also be allowed to travel out of the bike lane if they can keep up with the flow of traffic.

The bill also eliminates the need for a bike rider to have a bell or other audible device installed on their bike, although riders are still encouraged to have them.

The driver of the car is now required to give an audible signal to the biker before passing them.

Penalties for violations range from $100 for a first violation to $500 for a third violation.
