Monday marked the first day of presentations at the West Virginia Manufacturing Leadership Summit at Glade Springs Resort in Daniels.

The three-day summit, hosted by the West Virginia Manufacturers Association, is designed to inform the public about important events and issues that manufacturers face.

Gaston Caperton, the 31st Governor of West Virginia, kicked off the program with inspiring remarks about the importance of building a great education system in order to have a strong workforce.

“I see a West Virginia where people work, where children learn, and where we are productive and healthy,” Caperton said.

He was followed by 14 speakers, who ranged from attorneys, experts and leaders in various industries, including technology, energy, trade and business.

Some notable speakers included Jose “Zito” Sartarelli, the dean of WVU’s College of Business and Economics, and Mario Longhi, president and CEO of United States Steel Corporation.

Five speakers are scheduled to present tomorrow as well, beginning at 8:30 a.m., with Frank Macchiarola, the executive vice president of government affairs for America’s Natural Gas Alliance.
