At its peak, the Shoney’s brand was 1,300 locations strong.

Perhaps the iconic restaurant chain that began in Charleston, West Virginia in 1947 thinks that a new commitment in the Mountain State will help spur future growth.

Shoney’s has re-invented itself several times over the years, with the newest Shoney’s location in Morgantown ready to continue that tradition.

A brand new, 5,000-square foot restaurant opens June 25 at 9 Sterling Drive.

According to Shoney’s officials, the new restaurant creates 70 new jobs. It will also be the first WV location to serve beer and wine, a concept the chain recently introduced in other states.

Shoney’s currently has 165 locations across 16 states.

“We are completely committed to Shoney’s return to its glory days and we are true to its roots, which began in the Mountain State,” said David Davoudpour, Shoney’s chairman and CEO. “One of Shoney’s core values is the commitment to the local communities that we serve.

"We are glad to see a new Shoney’s in Morgantown, with a newly designed restaurant that is better than ever. And of course, let’s go Mountaineers!”

Hoping to tap into the rich sports following in the hometown of West Virginia University, the new restaurant will feature free Wi-Fi and multiple big screen televisions for its 144 guest capacity.

“We love this city and the city loves Shoney’s,” said Shoney’s franchisee Hossein Nikzad, a Morgantown resident. “We’re excited.”

Shoney’s currently has 10 other locations in West Virginia: Quincy, Charleston, Huntington, Lewisburg, Oak Hill, Parkersburg, Princeton, Ripley, Summersville and Sutton.
