QUINCY, WV - The West Virginia State Police is putting a stop to a family business that troopers are calling a scheme. Family members have been going into various stores around Kanawha County, focusing primarily on Walmart and Rite Aid, according to Trooper Larry O'Bryan with the Quincy detachment. O'Bryan said the scheme involves a grandmother, her daughter, her grandson, and her 9-year-old grandchild.

A family member steals something from the back of the store and then takes it to the customer service desk to be returned. The person tells the clerk that he doesn't have a receipt. As a result, the clerk exchanges the item for a gift card to be used inside the store. The grandchild is encouraged to go into a parking lot to find a receipt from the ground or a trash can. The family member takes that gift card and gives it to another member of the family. That person then uses the card to purchase items found on the receipt in the store. He takes it, along with the receipt, to customer service and is able to get cash back.

Trooper O'Bryan believes the family has racked up thousands of dollars in returned merchandise. Margie Redman, 63, her daughter 32-year-old Temple Green, her grandson 33-year-old Derrick Walker and his girlfriend 26-year-old Stephanie Woodrum are being charged with computer fraud and conspiracy.

According to a criminal complaint issued by the Kanawha County Magistrate Court, they have conducted this scheme on 25 different occasions.

The 9-year-old, who is Redman's grandchild, is with a relative now and West Virginia Child Protective Services is investigating.
