Recent U.S. Census Bureau data found the number of U.S. breweries more than doubled between 2007 and 2012, growing from 398 to 869, and shipments increased 33.6 percent during that time.

The numbers came from the 2012 Economic Census Industry Series, and found the breweries industry reported $28.3 billion in shipments in 2012.

Employment in the breweries industry also increased 17.2 percent between 2007 and 2012, going from 22,252 employees to 26,077 in that time period; the average payroll per employee increased by 4.4 percent during the five-year period. Despite overall employment growth, the data showed the average number of employees per establishment was nearly halved, going from an average of 56 employees per brewery to 30 in 2012.

Beer shipments in kegs rose 88.2 percent to $2.4 billion from 2007 to 2012, but according to the U.S. Census Bureau, represent just a fraction of overall beer shipments.

The 2012 Economic Census Industry Series publishes data profiles of detailed industries, including information about specific products and services, which is only available from the economic census.

Economic census data about U.S. wineries also showed growth in the industry. The wineries industry employed 37,602 people in 2012, up from 33,390 in 2007, and the average payroll per employee grew 10.7 percent to $46,482.
