2014's 55 Good Things About West Virginia

Exceptional Stops Along West Virginia’s Country Roads

The Mountain State’s gentle slide into spring, with its warm colors and longer days, sets the stage for exploring and enjoying the many treasures tucked along its winding country roads.

Too often we hear about a lack of “good news,” but every year since 1986, The State Journal has devoted time and space to tell the stories of the people, places, businesses and traditions that make West Virginia a special place — the good things.

This is part of The State Journal’s mission. Setting out each spring to discover more exceptional gems that dot our state’s landscape to share with readers in this publication every summer has become a special tradition. Good things can be outdoor adventures, eateries and celebrations. The Mountain State’s good things are its volunteers, its cheerleaders and its historians.

We’ve decided to profile one “good thing” from each county again this year. This also is the third year we present the “55 Good Things About West Virginia Hall of Fame,” to feature past honorees that continue to be shining beacons of the values, ingenuity and spirit of West Virginia.

We have amassed more than 1,500 profiles of “good things” since starting this publication, and we’ve tried not to repeat any. We have found there are always more tales to be told and exceptional stories to share.
