Marshall University Visual Art Center nearing completion

HUNTINGTON, WV - Marshall University's new Visual Arts Center is nearing completion.

Construction on the 13 million dollar facility is complete and now equipment is being moved into the six-story building. The building will host six programs in the Marshall School of Art and Design.

The building, best known as the Stone and Thomas building, was built in 1902, the same year the School of Art and Design was founded. Sandra Reed, the new director of the School of Art and Design, says there was a concerted effort to preserve as much of the original architecture as possible while creating plenty of open space necessary for the needs of art students.

"Students start coming in August 25 for the first day of class, so we can't wait to see how they respond to this new place and settle in to making good use of this place we've prepared," Reed said. "I say we're making a place for things to happen."

The Visual Arts Center will be unveiled to the public during an event called "We Art Marshall" from September 18 through the 20.
