HUNTINGTON, WV -

Cabell Huntington Hospital has named Joy Pelfrey as vice president of nursing services and chief nursing officer.

Pelfrey earned both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Marshall University School of Nursing, where she completed the family nurse practitioner program.

She joined the hospital in 2003 as director of Senior Services. Since that time, she led the hospital to earn Nurses Improving Care of Healthsystem Elders status starting in 2006 and coordinated the implementation of a geriatric resource nurse model of care that has provided more than 100 nurses with advanced geriatric nursing certification in an effort to improve the quality of care for senior patients at Cabell Huntington.

The hospital also appointed two longtime nursing leaders to new positions.

Bunny Smith, executive director of the hospital’s Hoops Family Children’s Hospital, also now serves as a director of nursing. Teresa Sexton now is director of nursing and senior services.

Smith and Sexton both have extensive and accomplished nursing careers at Cabell Huntington Hospital and have held numerous leadership positions.

Opened in 1956, the 303-bed academic medical center is home to Hoops and the Edwards Comprehensive Cancer Center. It cares for patients from more than 29 counties in West Virginia, eastern Kentucky and southern Ohio.
