CHARLESTON, West Virginia - WOWK 13 News has learned of an animal abuse case in Charleston, WV. A tabby cat named "Maximus" wandered into a woman's home on Huron Terrace in Charleston on Monday evening. The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, has several cats of her own and had a door her pets went in and out of. She believes that's how "Maximus" got into her basement. She contacted a local rescue group for help as soon as she saw him.

The cat had a rope around its neck, according to the woman, and had to be taken to the emergency room. The cat has been given antibiotics, fluids, pain medicine. 13 News has also learned that the wound around his neck has been cleaned and bandaged.

The cat is staying the night at the emergency clinic. The local rescue group, Itty Bitty Kitty Committee, said the cat will need additional medical care in the days to come. It will be seeking donations from the community to help pay for the cat's care.
