The Morgan Arts Council’s Digital Media Center for Public Engagement was among the 66 projects in 38 states to receive grant funds from the National Endowment of the Arts “Our Town” program.

“We were awarded $25,000,” Morgan Arts Council Organizer Anne Beckley said in a news release. “A third of what we requested, but it does get us started.”

The West Virginia Commission on the Arts also contributed $10,500 for the project, which is officially called “Engage Berkeley Springs.”

The Digital Media Center will initially be established on the second floor of the Ice House, the Berkeley Springs artist co-op. It will aim to engage the community of all ages both in creating original video content and distribution of it throughout several platforms, such as cable television and the Internet and provide both training and technology for area residents.

“This is a huge, multi-year project that involves purchase of major equipment and renovation of additional space at the Ice House as well as art activities,” Beckley said. “We see many more grant applications in our future.

“There are several initial partners in this project, and we anticipate many more to come as they realize what having a production and broadcast studio in the community means.”
