SOUTH CHARLESTON, WV - On the hill in South Charleston, West Virginia excitement is building as the start of the high school football season is now underway. In 2014, the focus is on safety with new procedures and equipment, including new helmets, for the football team at South Charleston High School.

"For me, it means I need to be on the look out for heat illnesses and dehydration. Things of that nature," said certified athletic trainer Heather Adams.

"We want to make sure our kids are the safest by wearing the best equipment as possible," said South Charleston High School Head Coach Donnie Mays.

This year not only will South Charleston High School football players have updated helmets to help prevent head injuries, but also better jersey material that could help reduce injuries.

"Concussions are a big time issue and just the cushioning inside it absorbs some of that hit. We wanted to make sure we had that," Mays said

The new helmets have protection some of the helmets last year did not.

"We had a few helmets last year the kids called them buckets and they didn't like them too well. I wanted to make sure that transition takes place and if you're looking at helmets and where concussions are happening that's where they were happening," Mays said.

And adding a "no grip" fitting jersey this year will help prevent some of those illegal tackles from happening.

All of the new equipment and procedures are designed to help keep players safe and prevent injuries throughout the 2014 High School Football Season.
