Local musician and special needs uncle go viral on Facebook

Growing up in Gilbert, WV, Travis Hatfield learned at an early age that he wanted to be a country music singer.

“Shew, since I can remember, about 6 years old.” said Travis.

There’s only one thing he cares about more than his music, and that’s his uncle Jamie Joe Cline. Jamie was diagnosed with Down Syndrome when he was a baby, and 47 years later he is the reason his nephew continues to follow his dream.

“He is the inspiration. His love for music is probably stronger than mine, honestly. Every day he is blasting his radio out.” said Travis.

Travis and Jamie spend at least one day a week together playing music and singing their favorite songs.

“Anything he wants to sing we sing it. Anything from George Jones, to Jason Aldean, to Brantley Gilbert, anything.” said Travis.

When Travis decided to post a video of them singing together, he had no idea it would go viral on Facebook.

“When I made the video it was made just to be sent to friends because everybody loves him. I just wanted them to see him happy and singing a little bit.” said Travis.

1 point 8 million views later, the success of the video is still hard for both Travis and Jaime to believe.

“Definitely overwhelming to say the least.” said Travis.

“Yeah.” said Jaime.

Since the video went viral, Travis now has fans all over the country. He’s even got a couple of calls from record labels in Nashville.

“He told me he listened to my video and things I have an amazing voice and thinks he could do big things. It was kind of a jaw dropper. I didn’t know what to say.” said Travis.

Beyond all the buzz and new found fans, Travis says at the end of the day his uncle is the one he owes everything to.

“He’s actually more like my brother honestly. He’s lived with us going on, well a little over 10 years since his parents died. He is definitely the inspiration for everything.” said Travis.

Travis hopes to make a trip to Nashville as soon as possible. He would love to get a record deal and give Southern, WV someone to be proud of.
