Ohio Woman Gets Life in Prison for her Role in 7-Year-Old’s Rape

A woman has been sentenced to life in prison for her role in the rape and sexual battery of a 7-year-old.

“I just can’t imagine the sadness, the fear, the uncertainty, all of the those negative feeling the child experiences, and will  continue to experience, and relive over and over again, long into adulthood,” said Jefferson County Common Pleas Judge Michelle Miller.

Even though Brandy DePew was sentenced Wednesday, the case isn’t quite closed . After she changed her plea to guilty, Judge Miller had harsh words for DePew about protecting the child under her care.

“I have to say, it’s just absolutely reprehensible,” Miller said. “Your relationship with the victim– you were there in a position to protect that child, and you failed to do so. You didn’t do so until the police hauled you in, so in the courts opinion it was a little too little too late.”

Assistant Prosecutor Jeff Bruzzese says DePew helped her boyfriend rape the young girl in Wells Township.  He adds, her charges: complicity to rape, complicity of gross sexual imposition, and complicity to commit sexual battery, are just as serious as her committing the rape.  She will have to register as the highest level of sex offender, if she ever gets out of jail.

“She did enter a plea of guilty here today, but there has been no deal made for her testimony or no bargain or no reduced sentence for her testimony, but today’s plea and sentence does free her up to be compelled by subpoena to come into court to testify against her co-defendant,” Bruzzese added.

DePew’s co-defendant, Shawn Hoagland, is scheduled to go to trial later this summer.

DePew’s exact sentence is life in prison without the possibility of parole. The maximum on her felony one charge was life without the possibly of any parole.
