Selling Homes in the Flood Zone

411 Elk Avenue in Clendenin, WV was a place the Burdette family planned to call home forever.

“It was somewhere that we thought we would stay always, but after the flood and living through it, it was just too scary,” said Vicky Burdette. 

Since FEMA buyouts could take years, they decided to sell the home on their own.

The property that includes two lots and river access was once appraised for $150,000. It’s now on the market for $25,000. 

“They are turning to selling their homes by owner to get the most they can out of the homes without paying realtor fees and things like that,” said Mike Shinn with the Greater Kanawha Long-Term Recovery Committee. 

The upstairs of the Burdette’s home wasn’t damaged. The downstairs has been cleaned and is ready for repairs. 

Flood recovery organizers think the low prices will bring in buyers interested in flipping homes. The opportunity could be the fresh start the small town is looking for.

“There are some great plans for the future and a bright future, I think, for the Clendenin area,” said Mike Shinn.

Vicky says leaving her home behind won’t be easy, but she prays that a new family will love it just as much as she did. 

“I really missed being here and I would really like to see it back the way it used to be or better,” said Vicky Burdette.

Flood insurance covered a portion of the damage to the Burdette family’s home. They plan to move to the Pinch area in the next few weeks.
