Coffee shops are a dime a dozen in most places, but in Wayne, WV, there’s not a single place to grab a latte.

But a non profit is changing that.

“There’s not a whole of opportunity in Wayne, but we thought with the development of the Urlings building, there’s room to put in a coffee shop,” said Ryan Devine, a VISTA Volunteer for Coalfield Development.

Coalfield Development Corporation is renovating the downtown Urlings building, transforming it into Trout’s Hill Coffee.

“There’s just a not a lot of diversity in employment here and a lot of the jobs pay a low wage,” said Nicki Rowe-Fortner, Coalfield Development’s Associate Director.

Future baristas are also tenants of Coalfield’s sustainable housing program.

The program includes on the job training, a two-year degree and life skills classes, aiming to break the poverty cycle.

“I can put it on my resume and I can go farther and I can say I did this,” said Ashleigh Hodge, a program member and coffee shop manager.

Coffee shop employees will live upstairs above the shop, making it the first tenant run coffee shop in West Virginia.

“They don’t just live in the affordable housing here, the have the opportunity to invest in this building and the opportunity for employment,” Devine said.

The housing was constructed by Coalfield’s construction team. The crews are building five housing units in total and transforming the downstairs into an espresso bar and art gallery.

Trout’s Hill Coffee is set to open in August. The shop was completely funded by community donations. If you would like to contribute to the project, visit Trout Hill’s Kickstarter page.

Trout Hills Coffee was completely funded through kick starter and community donations… including 10 thousand dollars from a former Wayne resident.
