Jennifer Abney joined WOWK 13 News in November 2015. She is no stranger to the news scene. In 2007, Jennifer was named “Best Anchor” by the Alabama Associated Press as the morning news anchor at WKRG-TV in Mobile, AL. She also received first place Associated Press awards for Best Health, Best Series and Best Feature reports during her time in North Carolina at WECT-TV. While she has received many television awards, Jennifer is also proud of her off-air accomplishments. She began a holiday fundraiser at WECT-TV for local children. In its second year, the project raised more than $100,000 for the Salvation Army.
While on the Gulf Coast she covered the devastation of Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina, sharing stories of heartbreak and hope. Jennifer is passionate about sharing stories that make a difference to viewers in her community. While in Pittsburgh, Jennifer’s interview with a hit-and-run victim resulted in the arrest of a suspect in the case – bringing some comfort to the woman who was permanently impaired by the accident. She was the only local journalist to share the inspiring story of the fitness instructor who survived the 2009 LA Fitness Shooting Spree, during the one year anniversary observance of the tragedy. During her time in the Steel City, Jennifer covered everything from the G-20 Summit to ‘Snowmageddon’. Navigating two feet of snowfall in one weekend is quite a challenge for a girl who grew up in Florida and South Alabama! She also traveled to Dallas to cover the Steelers’ bid for Super Bowl XLV.
Jennifer received her bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism and Marketing from Troy University, where she also anchored the college cable newscasts and volunteered with Kappa Delta sorority.
Jennifer and her husband, Clay, are excited to experience all the wild and wonderful adventures West Virginia has to offer! They both enjoy kayaking, hiking, and zip-lining, and they can’t wait to hit the WV slopes this winter! They have two ‘children’ – a Jack Russell, named Hula, and a cat, who sometimes answers to Bella. Jennifer enjoys volunteering her time for many nonprofit organizations and speaking to groups about the importance of empowering young people to dream big! She is an avid traveler, shopper, and decorator. She always welcomes local shopping, hiking and dining recommendations!
