Voice-activated devices and assistants, like the Amazon Echo – or the smaller version called, the Amazon Echo Dot – are the new wave of technology. Users now have the ability to interact with these devices across a range of “skills” on Amazon Alexa that are available to program, now including spoken local news and weather updates.

News 8 is happy to be featured on Amazon Alexa. Users are now able to hear Connecticut’s news and weather update with familiar voices from the 13 News Team and Stormtracker 13 Meteorologists. The team will keep you connected to what’s happening throughout the day simply by responding to, “Alexa, what’s my flash briefing?”

Here’s how to enable this feature on your Amazon Alexa powered device, like the Amazon Echo or Amazon Echo Dot:

  1. Download the free Amazon Alexa app to your iPhoneiPad or Android. You’ll need this to connect to your Amazon device, following the original set-up directions for your Echo or Echo Dot.
  2. Open the app on your phone
  3. Click on the top left-hand drop-down menu to select ‘Skills’
  4. In the search box, type in ‘WOWK’ or click/tap here for a direct link.
  5. Select our result and tap, ‘Enable Skill’
  6. Afterwards, return back to the drop-down on the top left and click ‘Settings’
  7. Scroll down until you can click on ‘Flash Briefing’
  8. When you’re at that screen, tap on the top right, ‘Edit Order’
  9. This is where you can re-order your skills to hear WOWK ’s update first
  10. Ask: “Alexa, what’s my flash briefing?” to now hear WOWK’s News and Weather updates throughout the day
