Community reacts as Kmart store closes in St. Albans, WV

It is the end of a era for St. Albans, WV as a major retail store that has been there for decades has officially closed.

"I was like I hope they are still open and they are not," said Ashley Lattea when she realized she missed her chance to shop at the Kmart location one last time.

"I'm kind of sad about it. I liked Kmart," Lattea said.

Former customers and employee watched Monday as crews took the sign off the front of the building.

"I loved this store. I will really miss it. It is sad that they left us," said Frances Coleman, a long time customer.

After decades as a staple in the community the store officially closed to the public over the weekend. Earlier this year Sears Holding Company announced stores in St.Albans, Huntington and Clarksburg would be among dozens closing nationwide.

"People will have to spend more money traveling out of the area," Coleman said.

St. Albans Mayor Scott James said the city has contacted several businesses hoping to recruit a new store to the area to fill that space. But so far he said there haven't been any takers.
