More than a dozen shots were fired into a small, Kanawha County apartment around 11:10 p.m. on Tuesday, December 19. It happened in the 100 block of Washington Avenue in Institute.
The suspects in the case are still on the run.
Just around the corner, is West Virginia State University.
Witnesses say there were five people sitting in the living room of the apartment when the incident first began. The people inside heard a knock at the door. That’s when at least 13 shots were fired into the residence.
No one was injured. When I asked a witness how that was possible, he said, “God.”
We were told we could enter the apartment to see the scene for ourselves. Bullet holes were visible throughout the room. One, even making it’s way through an inner wall, into the kitchen area.
Authorities said Wednesday that the same apartment, with the same tenants, was hit by gunfire last year.
One neighbor we spoke with who did not want to be identified said, “I think that’s terrible. I’ve never heard of anything like that happening here in Institute.”
The woman has lived in the area for 46 years. She loves the community, loves West Virginia State University. She takes pride in the town that she calls home. “I just never want anything like this to happen again,” she said.
That’s the feeling of each of the neighbors we spoke with. The people living in that apartment said they’ve, moved out for good.
Deputies said witnesses saw a blue Chrysler 300 leaving the scene at a high rate of speed. If you have any information in the case, you are asked to contact deputies with the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office immediately.
