Charleston Police Arrest 19 in Hybrid Unit Sting

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK - The Charleston Police Department’s Hybrid Unit conducted an undercover sting on the East End today, arresting 19 people.

Police say 10 of those individuals arrested reported being homeless.

Covenant House's  Executive Director, Ellen Allen, and President of their Board of Directors, Daniel Lattanzi, released the following statement about the sting:

The Covenant House staff and Board of Directors are greatly concerned about the mass arrests and increasing efforts of the Charleston Police Department to criminalize and publicly shame the homeless. We know many of these faces, and they are faces of deep poverty, addiction, and untreated mental illness. We call on the city leaders, city council, and the Chief of Police to work with providers and citizens to find alternative methods and long-term solutions to incarceration.
