UPDATE: Man arrested after attempting to abduct teenage girl from Kroger parking lot

UPDATE (10/4/18 at 3:45 p.m.):

Police have released the name of the man who was arrested after attempting to abduct a 16-year-old girl from Kroger in downtown Clarksburg Wednesday afternoon.

Juan Carlos DeLeon Zanas, 46, of Clarksburg, allegedly attempted to get the girl into his van, according to the Clarksburg Police Department. A Kroger employee told police that multiple bystanders stopped him from doing so.

Zanas sped through the parking lot to get away, hit multiple cars and began driving toward Adamston on West Pike Street, police said. Police said Zanas, then, crashed into a telephone pole across from Koupal Towers and was taken into custody.

Zanas is charged with fleeing with reckless indifference. Police said other charges against Zanas are pending.

A vehicle crash took place on West Pike Street Wednesday afternoon after two men allegedly attempted to abduct a teenage girl from Kroger.

According to the Clarksburg Police Department, two men attempted to abduct the girl from the parking lot of Kroger located on West Pike Street in Clarksburg on Wednesday afternoon. Customers intervened with the attempted abduction, police said. 

Police said that upon arriving on scene, one of the men fled the parking lot in the vehicle, hitting two cars and leaving the other man behind. The man also struck two people who were walking in the lot, police said.

The driver of the vehicle crashed into a utility pole on West Pike Street, according to police. The driver of the vehicle was transported to the hospital by the Harrison County EMS, police said. He was admitted to United Hospital Center and will head to Harrison County Magistrate Court when he is released.

The second man who attempted the abduction has been detained by police, officers said.

The driver of the vehicle will be charged with felony fleeing while DUI, according to Clarksburg Police Chief Robbie Hilliard, and has multiple other charges pending.

West Pike Street was closed to one lane while crews cleaned up the accident. The Clarksburg Police Department, Harrison County EMS and Clarksburg Fire Department responded to the scene.
