UPDATE: Monongalia County school teacher killed by tree falling on home

UPDATE (9/11/18 at 11:30 a.m.):

A Monongalia County school teacher was killed when a tree fell onto her home Monday morning.

According to Monongalia County school officials, Shari Austin, a fourth-grade teacher at Brookhaven Elementary School, was killed when a tree fell onto her home.

A woman was killed when a tree fell onto her residence in Monongalia County early Monday morning.

A large tree fell onto a residence at Pine Tree Lane at approximately 4:30 a.m., according to Cheat Lake Volunteer Fire Department Chief Jason Christopher. A woman in her mid-to-late 50s was sleeping upstairs when the tree came through the roof and landed on her, Christopher said. She was pronounced dead on scene.

Christopher said the tree was uprooted, and with the saturated ground and high winds throughout the night, he’s sure weather contributed to the accident.

The Brookhaven, Star City, Point Marion and Bruceton Volunteer Fire Departments also responded to the scene, along with the Department of Homeland Security and a tree removal company.
