BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) —  The father of a 5 month-old baby boy that was found unresponsive in a bathtub of a Jefferson County residence Sunday night has been charged in the child’s death.

Cordarius Cotton, 23, has been charged for reckless manslaughter and remains in Jefferson County Jail with bond set to $15,000. Sheriff’s deputies responded to the emergency call around 8:20 p.m.

According to the interrogation with detectives, Cotton turned on the water in the tub, placed the 5-month-old child in it and left the room to play a video game. Cotton allegedly forgot the child was in the tub, returned and found the child unresponsive.

The Jefferson County sheriff’s detectives reviewed the case with the district attorney and obtained an arrest warrant, formally charging Cotton for the reckless manslaughter.

According to Chief Donnie West with Center Point Fire and Rescue, paramedics assisted the Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies by performing advanced life support and transporting the child to Children’s of Alabama. The baby was then pronounced dead after arriving at the hospital, based on a report from Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Randy Christian.

Monday, the Jefferson County coroner identified the child as 5-month-old Dezmond Cotton.

“I can’t imagine how hard this is going to be on that child’s family,” Christian said in a written press release. “This will be heart wrenching for all involved. God be with them.”
