Coronavirus in West Virginia

KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (WOWK) — According to the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department, a vaccinated person has passed away from COVID-19.

The Director of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department, Dr. Sherri Young, says that this is the first breakthrough death in the county.

The man who passed away was 76 years old.

13 News found out this is not the only COVID-19 death in West Virginia among fully vaccinated people.

13 News anchor Rob Macko spoke with Shannon McBee, the State Epidemiologist who says that as of July 1st, there have been 31 vaccine breakthrough deaths in West Virginia. She says that represents about 1.3% of the COVID-19 related deaths in the state.

McBee says most of the deaths were considered high-risk. She says it’s a reminder of how deadly the virus can be and says vaccines are still the best defense against the virus.
