LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – A teenager who unexpectedly gave birth has admitted to smothering her infant daughter in Kentucky.

The Courier Journal reports 18-year-old Jasmine Wade pleaded guilty Tuesday to second-degree manslaughter in the 2015 death of Jazmine Berry. Although Wade agreed to serve seven years in prison, a judge will ultimately decide her sentence at a March hearing.

The then-15-year-old told police she went to a bathroom while visiting her ailing grandmother in a Louisville hospital and gave birth.

In her plea deal, Wade admitted to taking pictures with the infant before wrapping the girl in towels and placing her inside her purse. Police discovered the baby about 12 hours after she was born. A medical examiner concluded Berry was premature and born alive.
