Huntington's Kitchen kicks off "Dining with a Doc" program

HUNTINGTON, WV (WOWK) - A new program at Huntington's Kitchen is bringing doctors to the table when it comes to healthy eating. "Dining with a Doc" is a Cabell Huntington Hospital program that seeks to create open conversations between doctors and the people of Huntington. The first free event kicked off Tuesday night and was centered on healthy eating and fitness before, during and after pregnancy.

"We tried to think of a way that we could get doctors in here doing a presentation, but have it not feel like a typical presentation," said Marty Emerson, Chef Manager at Huntington's Kitchen. "At home, most of your conversation happens in the kitchen or at the dining room table, so we thought, why not come in and cook with the doctor or physician?"

The group learned how to cook a zucchini noodle stir-fry, while discussing their health questions with Dr. Joseph Assaley, a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist.

"I thought a wonderful topic, if we're talking about cooking and eating right, is fitness and pregnancy, before, during and after," said Dr. Assaley. "So we're going to talk about exercise during pregnancy and how to eat right during pregnancy."

The focus for each monthly "Dining with a Doc" event will change, and will also incorporate local fitness experts. Tuesday's event included Randi Lynn Greene, the owner and creator of RLG Fitness.

Greene and Dr. Assaley helped answer a wide range of questions, including topics such as, can you still do CrossFit while pregnant? Dr. Assaley says yes, you can.

Jessica Bishop is 13-weeks pregnant and attended the event. As someone who does CrossFit to work out, it made her feel more comfortable to hear the doctor's perspective.

"I just got out of my first trimester so I'm starting to feel better, and I can actually eat healthier food," said Bishop. "I'm starting to go back to CrossFit and I just wanted the reassurance that it was okay."

The next "Dining with a Doc" event will take place May 1 and will focus on "Healthy Guidelines for Women's Health" with Jessica Granger, MD, OB/GYN. The event is free and open to the first 20 reservations. To sign up, call Huntington's Kitchen at 304-522-0887.
