Judge Signs Order for 2014 Water Crisis Checks

KANAWHA COUNTY, WV (WOWK) - Customers hit by the 2014 water crisis will finally get the checks they've been waiting for.

Judge John Copenhaver signed the order today, June 8th, 2018, requiring West Virginia American Water, Eastman Chemical, and Dennis Farrel to pay up as part of the $150,000,000 class action lawsuit.

The suit's settlement administrator expects to start getting checks out by mid-September.

Thousands of West Virginians still need to fix their claims, so there will be a 30-day grace period.

And the final remaining party will be back in court.

Kevin Thompson, an attorney in the water crisis class action suit, said, "We had agreed to a settlement package that included $350,00 for Gary Southern, but the judge rejected that part of the settlement. He's sending us back to court. Gary Southern having to face a little more justice as far as people getting their checks."

As Thompson said, that litigation won't stop the checks from being mailed out.

Households can expect to receive about $525 and businesses between $6,000 and $25,000.
