WVAW Launches Interactive Map for Infrastructure Projects

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK)- - Ever wonder where the money from your water bill is going each month? West Virginia American Water is doing just that with a new online interactive map. The company says they hope to increase transparency and let you know when construction is happening in your neighborhood.

Temperatures are rising and that means construction is in full swing.

"There were 2 major periods when water infrastructure was installed, so the 1920s and soon after WWII. We are now in the replacement era," WVAW External Affairs Manager Laura Martin told 13 News.

Water mains 75 to 100 years old now have to be replaced, so West Virginia American Water is working at 3 times the rate putting in new lines statewide.

To help customers keep up, the company created an interactive website listing where a project is, how much it costs and what work is being done.

"Because of this new surcharge program that was put in place last year in 2017, we came up with this idea of having a map to show customers how that surcharge is being invested in their neighborhood," Martin explained.

The map can also be used to help neighbors avoid traffic delays and road closures.

"We're really doing this so we can give transparency to the dollars that we are putting to good use. We want to make sure our customers to know we are being good stewards of their monthly water payments, to reinvest it back into the system so they have safe, reliable water service day in and day out," Martin told 13 News.
