UPDATE (Dec. 14, 2022, at 10:43 a.m.): The Charleston Police Department has identified a man accused in a carjacking Tuesday, Dec. 13 as Shannon Rogers, 45, of Charleston.
Rogers faces charges of Grand Larceny Auto and Fleeing with Reckless Indifference, police say.
According to the CPD, officers responded to the One Stop at 129 Lee Street West around 6:10 p.m. Tuesday night. Police say they spoke to the owner of the stolen vehicle who said he had left his vehicle running with his 75-year-old father in the passenger seat while he ran into the store.
Police say while the vehicle owner was inside, Rogers, who had been on a bicycle in the parking lot, allegedly got into the vehicle and drove off “at a high rate of speed” with the man’s father still in the vehicle.
According to CPD, the father was let out of the vehicle near Lee and Clendenin Streets before the suspect sped off again. Authorities say they attempted a traffic stop at Piedmont Road and Slack Street, but the vehicle fled again heading toward the Brook Street entrance ramp to I-77. The suspect then took I-77S to the Greenbrier Street exit heading toward Washington Street East.
CPD says the suspect stopped the vehicle in a parking lot in the 1600 block of Washington Street East and was taken into custody.
No injuries were reported during the incident, according to police.
UPDATE (Dec. 13, 2022, at 9:43 p.m.): Charleston Police officials say the suspect in custody has been identified as Shannon Rogers.
No further information has been released in this case.
CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – A carjacking led to a pursuit through Charleston, West Virginia, Tuesday night.
According to Charleston Police, a suspect hijacked a car from an elderly person at the West Side One Stop on Tuesday, Dec. 13, 2022.
The owner of the car tells 13 News his father was the person who was carjacked and that the suspect allegedly had a gun. The vehicle owner says his father was let out of the vehicle at the Lee Street bridge in Charleston.
The suspect then led authorities on a vehicle pursuit through Charleston, including onto the interstate before exiting back into town, officials say.
Authorities say they detained the suspect near Washington and Greenbrier streets near the West Virginia State Capitol in Charleston. A witness tells 13 News they saw the suspect get out of the car and flee toward the McDonalds parking lot where police allegedly tased the man to detain him.
