13 News Helps With Military Hero Homecoming Surprise

Local News

Tyler and Braden Sigmon are just like any other kids. They love to play football, hunt, and fish. But for the last eight months, they have been missing their favorite partner for all of their favorite activities.

“I think I am most excited to just be able to throw the football with him again,” said Tyler, 8. His older brother Braden, 10, added, “For Christmas, I asked Santa to send my dad home so we could fish and hunt.”

Their dad, Staff Sergeant Matt Sigmon has been deployed for the last eight months with the Army National Guard.

“I think they try to be strong for me,” their mom, Jennifer, told 13 News. She added,”But I know they are so excited to see him.”

A moment that happened sooner than expected. Because of an injury, Matt Sigmon was sent home a few months early. Jennifer reached out to 13 News and asked for our help in surprising the boys with the exciting news.

The boys thought they were being interviewed for a story about kids who have a parent deployed. We talked about their dad and how much they miss him — the boys not knowing that they would see him the following hour.

During the 6 PM Newscast, Patrick Simon and Jennifer Abney made the exciting announcement. As the boys were watching in their living room.

At first, their reactions were some of shock and disbelief — but very quickly, it turned to sheer joy.

“Really, mom! Tonight????”

We then quickly traveled to Yeager Airport to meet Matt, who landed just before 7:30. The moment was touching — so sweet, filled with lots of laughs, smiles, tears, and I love yous.

“We’re never letting go,” said Jennifer. “Never.”

13 News thanks Sergeant Matt Sigmon for his service and thanks his family for allowing us to tell their story. It was truly an honor.
