CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — If you are looking for something to do this weekend (April 5th through April 7th), we have put together a list of some of the events happening across our area!

2019 Mountaineer Madness Autograph Extravaganza

Mountaineer Madness 2019 is coming to Sports Fanz in Hurricane on April 6th, 2019. This years event will have David Long Jr, the 2018 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year. Gary Jennings, David Sills, Trevon Wesco and Will Grier. From Noon – 4 fans can receive autographs and take pictures with their favorite Mountaineer players. Steve Martin’s Picasso at the Lapin Agile

Opening Night of comedian Steve Martin’s play Picasso At The Lapin Agile is 8 PM Friday, April 5th at The Kindred Communications Building on 555 5th Avenue Huntington, WV. Tickets are $15, and you can find more info at https://alchemypicasso.brownpapertickets.com/. There will be a second perdormance this weekend on Saturday, April 6th at 8 PM.

Inaugural Capital Cup at Shawnee Sports Complex

The Kanawha County Commission and Shawnee Sports Complex are thrilled to announce that April 5th through April 7th, the West Virginia Futbol Club will host their inaugural Capital Cup at the complex. The Shawnee Sports Complex will welcome over 130 teams, both competitive and recreational, from West Virginia and the surrounding region; including Charlotte, Columbus, Cincinnati, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Lexington, Cleveland, Washington D.C., and more. There is no cost to the public to attend the tournament.  There is a schedule of games available at https://westvirginiafutbolclub.com/wvfc-capital-cup.  For more information on hosting a tournament visit https://shawneesports.com/.

West Virginia State University Annual Black & Gold Gala

The 7th annual West Virginia State University and West Virginia State University Foundation  Black & Gold Gala will take place, Friday, April 5th, at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center. The black tie event recognizes the generosity of donors while raising funds to further support educational programs and students at the University. The event will begin at 6:15 p.m. with a reception and silent auction, followed by dinner and the program recognizing honorees at 7:30 p.m. After the program and dinner, the Gala will continue with an evening of dancing to live music provided by Santa Cruz. Marshall University’s Jazz Ensemble & Landau Eugene Murphy Jr Jazz Concert


Marshall University’s Jazz Ensemble will play with “America’s Got Talent” Season 6 winner Landau Eugene Murphy Jr. at 7 PM on Friday, April 5th, at Tamarack. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at tamarackwv.com or by calling 304.256.6843

Two-Paino Recital at Marshall University

Marshall University’s Dr. Johan Botes, assistant professor of music, along with former James Madison University piano professor Vicki Cavendish, who now resides in Charleston and maintains a full private piano studio, will perform a two-piano recital beginning at 7:30 PM, Friday, April 5th, in Smith Recital Hall on the Huntington campus. They will perform Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-Flat Minor, Op. 23, as well as Richard Rodney Bennett’s Four Piece Suite. The event is free and open to the public, with sponsorship from the School of Music in the College of Arts and Media.

WV Black Knights Semi-Pro Football Team Opening Game

Saturday, April 6th, 2019, at 7 PM, the West Virginia Black Knights semi pro football team has their opening game at Nitro High School against the Portsmouth Stealth. Admission for adults $8, students, service and military $6, kids 10 and under is $4, $2 if wearing their little league sports jersey. 5 and under is free. “Take A Walk On The Wild Side” Nature Hikes

St. Albans City Park is hosting their 6th  6th Annual “Take A Walk On The Wild Side” Nature Hikes Saturday, April 6th from 9 AM until 1 PM. The entire family can learn about wildflowers, animals and birds at this event that features multiple hikes, photography, prizes, special programs for children, and food. Admission is free and donations are accepted.

Aaron Fisher & Ghost Fleet CD Release Party

Rock City Cake Company is holding a album release for hometown band Aaron Fisher and Ghost Fleet on April 6th at 8 PM. The band is releasing their second full length album, “Love is Fatal”, a follow up to their first release “Rancho Extreme.” Released in 2017, and streaming free at: aaronfisher.com. Also perfomring is Andrew Scotchie and the River Rats from Asheville, NC. Revered for their high energy live shows, dynamic musicianship & Scotchie’s larger than life stage presence, the band has continued to craft their hard driving style of rock n roll and are dedicated to building their musical family. 5th Annual WV and Beyond Youth Adult Bowling Tournament

The Kanawha Valley Youth Bowlers are hosting the 5th Annual WV and Beyond Youth Adult Bowling tournament at Galaxy Lanes in Kanawha City, WV on Sunday April 7th, 2019.  Check in will begin at 9 AM and bowling begins at 10 AM. This event will feature 50 Youth/Adult teams (100 bowlers) from all over West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio and North Carolina. 

Henry Purcell’s Opera Dido and Aeneas

The University of Rio Grande and Rio Grande Community College School of Arts and Letters is bringing opera to Southeast Ohio with a production of Henry Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. The performance will be on campus in the John W. Berry Fine and Performing Arts Center Alphus Christensen Theatre Saturday, April 6th at 7 PM and Sunday, April 7th at 3 PM. Admission is free and open to the public. 

South Charleston Chamber 5K Wellness Run/Walk

South Charleston Chamber of Commerce is hosting their 5th Annual 5K Wellness Run/Walk on Saturday, April 6th. Registration is 8 AM, and the run starts at 9 AM. Walkers will begin shortly after the run starts. The 5K starts and ends in Oakes Field in South Charleston. Ther route is through the downtown area of the City of South Charleston. Click or tap here for more info.

Mountain Stage at Ohio University

For over 35 years, Mountain Stage has established a long tradition of featuring national and international acts in almost every style of music. The two-hour radio show is produced in West Virginia and distributed by National Public Radio weekly on more than 150 stations across America and around the world via NPR Music and mountainstage.org. On Apr 7th, 2019 at 7 PM, Mountain Stage is being held at the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium in Athens, OH. PErforming will be The Lone Bellow, Over the Rhine, Anna Tivel, Scott Mulvahill, and Adam Remnant. Tickets are $20 for General admission, $18 for Seniors, and $12 for Sutdent and can be purched by clicking or tapping here.
