IRONTON, Ohio (WOWK) — As is tradition, the ‘Kingz and Queenz of the Kourt’ basketball tournament is taking place on Memorial Day Weekend.
For the last 25 years, a basketball tournament has always been held at the 9th
Street basketball court.
But since the ‘Young Brilliantnaires’ took it over, it has been more than just a weekend of fun for the family.
The ‘Young Brilliantnaires’ are a group of life-long friends that are now in charge of the basketball tournament.
They’re giving back to the community in the way of scholarships for the kids that participate.
Adults do have to pay $500 dollars per team to enter the tournament and have a chance of taking home $5,000 dollars. Adult teams consist of 8 players.
Kids, on the other hand, do not have to pay anything to enter the tournament.
Their teams are made up of 4 students and they have the chance of taking home a $1,000 dollar scholarship if they win in their division.
“We want to motivate these kids to go to college,” said Antonio Murphy, one of the tournament organizers. “We’re just trying to instill this good vibe in them and let them know that they are something, they can be something, and they’re going to be something if [they’re a] ‘Young Brilliantnaire.’”
To be eligible to receive their scholarship, participants must graduate high school.
Murphy tells 13 News they’re giving out $3,000 dollars worth of scholarships this year to one team that has been in the tournament for the last few years.
The ‘Kingz and Queenz of the Kourt’ basketball tournament is happening on May 25 and 26 from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The deadline to sign up is May 20.
