Body Found Outside of Charleston Women’s Shelter Identified

UPDATE (1/23/19 10 AM):

The Charleston Police Department has identified the woman whose body was found outside of Sojourners Women’s Shelter Sunday morning.

Police say the woman was as Patricia Galloway, 63, and homeless.

According to police, nothing at the scene indicated that Galloway’s death resulted from a criminal act.

Galloway’s body was taken to the Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy, and preliminary findings indicate that her cause of death was medical related and there were no immediate indicators that environmental conditions contributed to her death.

Police say toxicology findings are pending. 


According to Charleston Police, a woman was found deceased outside of Sojourners Women’s Shelter  Sunday morning.

The shelter is located along the 1400 block of Washington Street East and the body was discovered around 9 a.m. Sunday.

Several people who claimed to attempt to render aid to the woman, who has not been identified by authorities at this point in the investigation, said the woman was “frozen to the ground”.

Authorities did not release a cause of death, and said that would not be available this early on.

The woman’s body has been sent to the Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy, police said.
