A hero, long gone — but not forgotten. 100 years to the day that private Raymond Roy Beckett died in the line of duty, his family gathered to say thanks.
“You normally see a name and 2 dates,” said Beckett’s great-nephew Allen Johnson. “And all of the information that is associated with that person between those two dates is forgotten.”
Johnson wanted to ensure his uncle’s legacy lived on, so he began to do research to learn more about the young private.
Beckett was killed in action July 18, 1918 in France during the first day of the Battle of Soissons.
What a wonderful way to honor a family member that I feel like I know. He was originally buried in France, but his family fought to have their son brought home to a family cemetery in Cabell County.
“He’s a hero to all of us.”
