CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — Charleston Fire Chief Shawn Wanner is retiring, according to the city of Charleston.

In a statement, the Chief Wanner says it’s never the “right time” to leave a position.

“You like to think, ‘maybe I’ll wait until there’s some down time and then I can retire and not have to put the burden on everyone else,’ but that time doesn’t ever come,” he explained.

The Charleston Fire Department’s website says Wanner became Fire Chief in 2020, following Jeffrey Jackson.

Mayor Amy Shuler Goodwin said in 2020 that Wanner joined the Charleston Fire Department in April 1996. Before becoming Chief, he was Assistant Fire Chief.
