PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (AP) – A former Ohio high school soccer coach has been sentenced by a West Virginia judge for having a sexual relationship with a player.
The Parkersburg News and Sentinel reports 23-year-old Trent Stanley was ordered Monday to serve three to 15 years in prison on four counts of third-degree sexual assault.
Stanley’s lawyer, George Cosenza, asked the Wood County Circuit Court judge to spare his client additional time, saying his relationship with a teenager he’d coached was a horrible lapse in judgment.
Stanley made a deal with prosecutors in exchange for dropping charges, and pleaded guilty in October to taking a girl younger than 16 to his Parkersburg apartment and having sex there several times last year.
Stanley coached Belpre High School’s coed soccer team. He’ll be required to register as a sex offender.
