UPDATE (10:26 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 9): A Mason County man has been charged with first-degree murder after he allegedly shot and killed another man in the Ashton area on Saturday.

According to a criminal complaint, 28-year-old James Hatfield, of Gallipolis Ferry, was arrested after Jerrad Casey was found in the back of an SUV with a gunshot wound to his chest on the 33000 block of Huntington Rd. in Ashton.

The driver of the vehicle told deputies that Mr. Casey was shot on the 800 block of Willow Creek Rd. and that the shooter was still at the scene of the shooting.

The complaint said witnesses told deputies that Hatfield had threatened to kill Casey in text messages.


MASON COUNTY, WV (WOWK) — Mason County Sheriff Corey J. Miller says there was a fatal shooting in the Ashton, West Virginia, area early Saturday morning.

Sheriff Miller says deputies found a man with a gunshot wound to his chest. The sheriff says deputies attempted life-saving measures, but the man died.

Deputies arrested one man in connection with the shooting, Sheriff Miller says. This was an isolated incident, according to the sheriff.

The Mason County Sheriff’s Office is investigating. There is no other information at this time.
