Man Charged with Attempted Murder after Pursuit in Charleston

CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) –

UPDATE (2/27/19 Noon):

A man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder after a pursuit involving Charleston Police that ended in Boone County this morning.

Johnathan Gillispie was arrested after a pursuit that started on Westmoreland Drive early this morning.

A Charleston police officer went to make a routine traffic stop for a car having defective equipment. When he got out of his cruiser, police say Gillispie attempted to run the officer over. That is when the Charleston officer shot multiple rounds at the car which did not hit anyone

The pursuit hit speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. The chase ended in a crash with a different Charleston Police Officer and cruiser in Boone County.

That is where Gillispie was arrested.

Both officers and Gillispie were treated at the hospital for minor injuries. All since been released 

Gillispie was arraigned this morning and is facing multiple charges, including attempted murder.

His bail was set at $75,000. 

The officer that opened fire is being placed on administrative leave. This is routine procedure for an incident like this.

Gillespie is set to appear in court on March 8th.

Charleston Police say this is still an ongoing investigation.

An officer-involved shooting was reported in Charleston in the early morning hours of Wednesday, February 27.

According to dispatchers with Metro 911, a pursuit began near the intersection of Crescent Road and Westmoreland Drive in Charleston. 

The suspect in the case, who is unidentified at this time, attempted to run an officer over with his car, police said. 

The officer fired an unknown number of shots in the direction of the suspect, according to dispatchers. 

Another officer is being treated for injuries at a Charleston hospital. Police said in an attempt to end the pursuit, he rammed the suspects vehicle. It is unknown at this time what the extent of his injuries are. 

The pursuit continued on to the Ashford area of Boone County, according to police, where the suspect was taken into custody. 

It is unknown if the suspect was injured during the incident. 

Detectives have been on scene along Westmoreland gathering evidence. The area was blocked off as they investigated the incident.
