A man has been killed after a crash involving the Cabell County Sheriff Sunday morning.

According to West Virginia State Police, the crash occurred at the intersection of Sanns Drive and Ohio River Road in the Lesage area of northern Cabell County at just before 8 a.m. Sunday.

Troopers say that a truck driven by 88-year-old Mike Carter Jr. of Lesage failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection and was struck by an SUV being driven by Cabell County Sheriff Chuck Zerkle.

Carter Jr. was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. Zerkle was transported to the hospital with minor injuries but has since been released.

The intersection has since reopened. The Cabell County Sheriff’s Office, West Virginia State Police, the State Medical Examiner’s Office, and the Ohio River Valley Fire Department all responded to the scene.
