Motorcyclist dies in fiery school bus crash in Athens County

ATHENS, Ohio (WOWK) – A man on a motorcycle died in a fiery crash after a school bus went left of center in Athens County, Ohio.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash that happened on April 11th, 2019, at around 3:40 PM.

Troopers say an Alexander School District bus driven by Charles F. Horvath, 65, of Albany, Ohio, was traveling northbound on SR-356 and traveled left of center, striking a 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling south on SR356.

The motorcyclist, Bruce W. Sheppard, 63, of Zaleski, Ohio, was ejected and succumbed to his injuries. He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Athens County Coroner’s Office.

The motorcycle and the bus both caught fire as a result of the crash and became fully engulfed.

The bus had five children aboard, who did not sustain injuries.

The Highway Patrol was assisted by the Athens County Sheriff’s Office, Waterloo Township Fire Department, Athens County EMS, and the Athens County Coroner’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation.
