A Kentucky school is taking reading to anew level thanks to a new education grant.
Poage Elementary School in Ashland has received the 21st Century Education Grant for Good Use of Out of School Time.
Monday afternoon’s event of ‘Reading Across America’ brought studetns and their parents out to the elementary school for book swapping, face painting, and even a storytelling session.
The Poage Elementary School staff say they want to encourage students and their parents to start an active reading routine when their little ones are out of school for the day, and during breaks, too.
“We wanted to bring people together, our parents and students, to emphasize the importance of literacy,” said Betsy Moore, a kindergarten teacher at Poage Elementary. “We’re kind of coupling it on the back of ‘Read Across America.'”
The grant will allow schools like Poage Elementary to host more out-of-school events like the one they hosted on Monday.
