RISE WV Family Gets A New Home

Local News

A family displaced by the 2016 floods, finally got a new mobile home.

Mary and Jerry Hancock have been living in an apartment since last year. The couple was forced to demolish their home after the flood waters caused dangerous black mold.

“He said its that black mold and she ain’t gonna get no better until we get her out of here,” recalled Mary. “Then the inspector came and said we’d have to tear it down. It wasn’t safe.”

The couple’s daughter, Kathy, recalled the toll its taken on her family.

“She called me and said, ‘just put me in a nursing home, i gonna die before they get anything done’ and that was really hard,” said Kathy. “Mom kinda gave up hope for a while.”

Now more than two years later, the family is thrilled to have a new house on the land they’ve called home for more than 15 years.

“Im tickled to be back home,” said Mary. “I told Jerry we ain’t moving ever again.”
