UPDATE: Deputies Release More Info, Name of Teen Found in Elk River

UPDATE (7/6/18 11:50 AM): The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office has released more information about and the name of the 17-year-old who was recovered from the Elk River last night. 

On July 5th, 2018, at around 7:30 PM, dispatchers received a call that two males were in the Elk River and one male was requesting help. 

Members of the Clendenin Fire Department and the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to provide help. 

Prior to arriving at the scene, emergency responders were notified that one male had went under water and efforts were being made to rescue him.

He was identified as 17-year-old Cody McCallister, from the Elkview area.

Members of the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office arrived on scene and began to interview witnesses to the incident.

It was determined that McCallister was attempting to swim across the river, when he became distressed and began to ask for help.

The Clendenin Fire Department, along with the Charleston and South Charleston Fire Departments, deployed rescue divers into the water as soon as they arrived.  

At around 11:20 PM Fire Department personnel recovered the body of McCallister from the river.

The West Virginia Medical Examiner’s Office was contacted and responded to the scene.

UPDATE: The body of the 17 year-old-boy who went missing in the Elk River has been found, according to dispatchers.

ORIGINAL: Officials told 13 News, the young man went missing while swimming with friends. It happened around 7:30 p.m. Thursday night near River Haven Road.

Divers had been on scene searching all night. Additional crews were called in to help with the search effort.
