Volunteers set Guinness World Record at Portsmouth

Local News

More than a thousand volunteers reached a major accomplishment Saturday in Portsmouth, setting a Guinness World Record during a massive revitalization project downtown.

During the event called Plant Portsmouth, residents came out to help clean up the streets downtown and take part in setting a world record. A group of 1,405 volunteers accomplished that task and will go down in the record book for having the “most people potting plants simultaneously.” Organizers even had a representative from the Guinness Book of World Records at the event to verify it.

During the Plant Portsmouth event, volunteers power washed sidewalks and painted light posts on multiple downtown streets. The fun continued afterward with an awards ceremony at Tracy Park.

Friends of Portsmouth, a local nonprofit organization involved with community growth and prosperity, also announced that local business owners and citizens donated nearly $100,000 for the downtown transformation.
