WORKING FOR YOU: Protecting children from sexual predators in wake of Kanawha County arrest

Local News

Detectives say Facebook employees tipped local investigators off about an unthinkable video.

That video they say was uploaded by the man who lives in this home along James River Road in Cabin Creek.  As a result, 46-year-old Donald Franklin Adkins is now facing a child pornography charge.

The description of the video is detailed in court documents, but those details are far too graphic to disclose.  It does, however, involve an infant or toddler aged female, and is 26 seconds long.  The criminal complaint in the case states that Adkins admitted to detectives that he did both view and exchange that video.

At this point, investigators say the identity of the child is unknown.

I went to Adkins’ home.  A man who identified himself as a family member of the suspect answered the door.  He declined to make a statement, as did Adkins himself, from jail.

Experts say there are ways that you can help to protect your children from sexual exploitation or abuse.

According to the Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, nothing is foolproof, but there are steps that you can take to reduce the risk.

They advise to be involved in the child’s life, choose caregivers carefully, encourage children to speak up and know what the boundaries are, and ask open ended questions.
