Moundsville, WV (WOWK) – It’s not unusual to see barges along the Ohio River, but the barges we saw Saturday do not belong here.

Sometime through the night, about 40 barges broke loose and were “free floating” between McMechen and Moundsville, according to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department.

Moundsville Police say they had to close the Moundsville Bridge for a short time this morning while they worked to wrangle the barges. The barges were also caught up along the riverbank in McMechen.

We’re still working to learn where the barges broke loose from.

Also in Pittsburgh, the Elmsworth Lock and Dam, which is the first lock and dam on the Ohio River, says 27 barges broke loose this morning in their area.

They currently have at least 15 resting at the front of the dam, but 5 are downstream.
